Somalia's 50th Anniversary of Independence
Somalia Unit, U.S. Embassy, Nairobi Somalia’s 50th Anniversary of Independence On behalf of the United States government and the people of the United States, the Somalia Unit congratulates all Somalis on the 50th anniversary of their Independence. The United States remains a steadfast partner of the Somali people and the Transitional Federal Government (TFG), committed to strengthening Somalia’s institutions and further developing a fully functioning, democratic, and self-reliant Republic. This is a week of historical milestones: on 26 June 1960 sovereignty was declared for the State of Somaliland, with unification occurring 5 days later forming the Republic of Somalia. Now, 50 years hence, Somaliland showed the world it can implement an orderly, peaceful, and democratic election. We congratulate the Somali People on this and many other grand achievements as the Republic celebrates its anniversary of unification. The partnership between our nations is based on mutual respect, commitment, and opportunity for all people. We encourage the Transitional Federal Government to continue its efforts to enable a secure and prosperous future for Somalia’s citizens. Regionally, your partnership with AMISOM helps create structures that seek to stabilize services while enabling education, justice, and commerce to flourish. As Somalis celebrate independence, the American people honor your history and the enduring bonds of friendship between our two great nations. Somalia’s enduring culture and dignified traditions provide a bright future for generations to come. So on this anniversary, the American people wish all Somalis a peaceful and prosperous holiday and hopeful wishes for the years to come.
